Quote + と + 言う / 思う

How it works

と marks a quotation or thought before verbs like 言う (say), 思う (think) and 聞く (hear). Direct quotes go in 「」; indirect quotes use the plain form: 行くと言いました.

Examples

  • 田中さんは「おはよう」と 言いました。Tanaka said “good morning”.
  • あしたは 雨だと 思います。I think it'll rain tomorrow.
