How it works

ていた is the past of ている: “was doing” at a certain time, or a state that existed in the past: 結婚していた (was married).

Examples

電話があったとき、シャワーをあびていました。I was taking a shower when the phone rang.
子どものころ、大阪にすんでいました。I lived in Osaka as a child.
