Plain form + んだけど / んですが

How it works

んだけど / んですが gives background before a request, question or explanation. The listener understands something follows: 道に迷ったんですが… (I'm lost, and…).

Examples

  • すみません、駅へ 行きたいんですが…。Excuse me, I'd like to get to the station…
  • この 漢字が わからないんだけど、教えて くれる？I don't get this kanji. Can you tell me?
