は

As for... (Highlights sentence topic)

Pattern

Noun + は + comment

How it works

は marks the topic: what the sentence is about. Everything after it is a comment on that topic. It is pronounced わ. Use it for something already known or being contrasted, and use が when introducing new information or answering “who/what”.

Examples

  • わたしは 学生です。I am a student.
  • きょうは さむいです。It is cold today.
  • 肉は 食べますが、魚は 食べません。I eat meat, but I don't eat fish.
