だす (To suddenly begin)
To suddenly begin, To start doing
JLPT N4
Pattern
Verb (ます-stem) + だす
How it works
ます-stem + だす means something suddenly starts: 泣きだす (burst into tears), 雨がふりだす (it starts pouring). It suggests the start was unexpected, unlike はじめる.
Examples
- 子どもが きゅうに 泣きだした。The child suddenly burst into tears.
- 雨が ふりだしました。It started raining.
