Verb (dictionary / ない-form) + ように

How it works

ように gives a purpose that isn't directly under your control, often with potential or ない-forms: 聞こえるように大きい声で話す (speak loudly so you can be heard). For direct goals, use ために.

Examples

  • うしろの 人にも 聞こえるように、大きい 声で 話して ください。Please speak loudly so people at the back can hear.
  • かぜを ひかないように、コートを 着ました。I put on a coat so I wouldn't catch a cold.
